Fieldy Listens, Even When Your Phone’s Away

When we first launched offline storage last year, it was Android-only, limited in scope, and honestly — not where we wanted it to be. Syncing was slow, the experience felt rough around the edges, and we heard that from you.

Today, offline storage is officially out of beta. It works on both iOS and Android, and it’s been rebuilt from the ground up.

What Is Offline Storage?

Offline storage lets your Fieldy device keep recording even when it’s not connected to your phone. The audio is stored directly on the device, and when you reconnect, everything syncs, transcribes, and summarizes automatically.

No manual steps. No exporting files. You open the Fieldy app, and your recordings appear — fully transcribed with AI-generated summaries, action items, and searchable text.

What Changed Since the Beta

The original offline storage release had real limitations. It was Android-only, sync times were unpredictable, and there were edge cases where recordings wouldn’t come through cleanly. We went back to the drawing board.

Here’s what’s different now:

  • iOS and Android support — offline storage now works identically on both platforms. No more waiting for feature parity.
  • Faster, more reliable syncing — we rewrote the sync engine. Transfers are smoother, with clear progress indicators so you always know where things stand.
  • Up to 3 days of offline recording on Fieldy 3 — leave your phone behind for an entire long weekend and still capture everything. Fieldy 2 supports up to 6 hours.
  • Automatic background sync — open the app and syncing starts immediately, even in the background. You don’t need to keep the app in the foreground.
  • Better error recovery — if a sync is interrupted, it picks up where it left off instead of starting over.

Why Offline Recording Matters

There are situations where keeping your phone nearby isn’t practical — or isn’t appropriate.

In healthcare, a doctor doing rounds doesn’t want to carry a phone into every patient room. With offline storage, the Fieldy device clips to a coat or lanyard and records the entire shift. Notes, summaries, and transcripts are ready when the doctor sits down to review them later.

In fieldwork, whether you’re on a construction site, in a warehouse, or moving between locations, your phone might be in a locker or a bag. Offline storage means you don’t miss anything.

In long meetings and conferences, Bluetooth connections can drop. It happens. With offline storage, a dropped connection doesn’t mean lost audio. The device keeps recording locally and syncs everything once reconnected.

When you just want to be present, sometimes the best thing you can do in a conversation is put your phone away. Offline storage lets you do that without sacrificing the notes.

How It Works

There’s nothing to configure. If your Fieldy device is running the latest firmware, offline storage is always active.

  1. Record as usual. Press the button on your Fieldy device to start recording. If your phone is nearby and connected, audio streams in real time as before. If your phone isn’t connected, the device stores audio locally.

  2. Reconnect when you’re ready. Open the Fieldy app on iOS or Android. The app detects offline recordings and begins syncing automatically.

  3. Review your notes. Once synced, Fieldy transcribes and summarizes everything in the background. You’ll have full transcripts, AI summaries, action items, and searchable text — usually within a few minutes.

Sync speed: roughly 1 hour of recorded audio takes about 5 minutes to sync over Bluetooth.

Fieldy 2 vs. Fieldy 3: Offline Storage Comparison

Fieldy 2 Fieldy 3
Offline storage capacity 6 hours ~3 days of average use
Battery life 46 hours Up to 7 days
When storage is full Overwrites oldest audio Overwrites oldest audio
Sync speed ~5 min per hour ~5 min per hour
iOS + Android support Yes Yes

If you’re relying on offline storage regularly — long shifts, travel, or multi-day use without charging — Fieldy 3’s larger capacity and 7-day battery life make a real difference.

Who Should Use Offline Storage?

Offline storage isn’t a niche feature. It’s useful for anyone who records conversations with Fieldy:

  • Healthcare professionals recording patient consultations across a full shift without carrying a phone. See how Fieldy works in healthcare.
  • Sales and consulting teams moving between client meetings throughout the day.
  • Journalists and researchers conducting interviews in locations with poor connectivity.
  • Students recording lectures while keeping their phone in their bag.
  • Anyone who values being present in conversations without worrying about technology.

Getting Started

If you already own a Fieldy device, make sure it’s running the latest firmware. Connect your device to the Fieldy app and check for updates in the device settings screen.

If you’re new to Fieldy, you can get started here:

Offline storage is included with every Fieldy subscription — no extra cost, no add-ons. It just works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does offline storage work with both Fieldy 2 and Fieldy 3?

Yes. Fieldy 3 supports up to 3 days of offline recording on average use, while Fieldy 2 supports up to 6 hours. Both require the latest firmware.

Do I need to turn offline storage on?

No. It’s always active. If your phone isn’t connected when you start recording, the device automatically stores audio locally.

What happens when the offline storage is full?

The device continues recording and overwrites the oldest audio first. This means you always have the most recent recordings available.

How long does it take to sync offline recordings?

About 5 minutes per hour of recorded audio. Progress is shown in the app so you can track it.

Is offline-recorded audio transcribed the same way as live recordings?

Yes. Once synced, offline recordings go through the same AI transcription and summarization pipeline. You get full transcripts, summaries, action items, and searchable text — identical to a live recording.

Is my data secure during offline storage?

Yes. Audio stored on the device is encrypted, and all data transfers between the device and the Fieldy app are end-to-end encrypted. Fieldy is HIPAA-compliant, so offline recordings meet the same security standards as live ones.

Offline storage was one of our most requested features, and we wanted to get it right before taking it out of beta. It’s ready now. Update your firmware, leave your phone behind, and let Fieldy handle the rest.
